| Dr. Diane Roberts Stoler, Ed.D., a health psychologist and professional speaker, sustained a stroke from a cerebral bleed and four traumatic brain injuries (two auto accidents, a defective lounge chair accident and brain surgery). Like millions of people, she was diagnosed with mild traumatic brain injury, not because of the severity of her injury, but the length of time she was unconscious following the injury (up to 60 minutes). The terms mild, moderate and severe, when relating to brain injury, do not indicate the severity of the injury or the eventual outcome. Rather these terms refer to the quality of alertness, amnesia and the how long a person has been unconscious following injury. From her own experience, training and extensive research, Dr. Stoler, co-authored with Barbara Albers Hill, the first reference book that applies to all aspects of brain trauma, including concussion, stroke and brain tumor. "Coping With Mild Traumatic Brain Injury: A Guide to Living with the Challenges Associated with Concussion / Brain Injury" describes the most common physical, mental and psychological symptoms of brain injury, explaining why each occurs and what can be done about it, as well as offering practical suggestions for coping with the problem. Also covered are financial, insurance and family issues; the rehabilitation process; and eventual outcomes. An extensive resources section provides additional guidance and sources of support. |
